The Business of Sports

What does it take to be an entrepreneur in the business of sports?  What are the unique challenges and opportunities faced by start-ups in the industry?  More fundamentally, how does one translate a life-long passion into a promising entrepreneurial opportunity?  We will attempt to answer these questions and others at our February Entrepreneur SIG meeting.  Our speaker, a graduate of Harvard College & Yale Law School, left an established law practice to start buying up minor league baseball franchises.  He shares our experiences with us this month.

Speaker's Bio:   Jason Freier, CEO of Hardball Capital

Jason Freier is Chief Executive Officer of Hardball Capital, a sports-related investment company and consulting business whose assets include affiliated minor league baseball franchises. Jason also serves as the President of the teams that Hardball Capital owns and/or manages. Jason is an attorney by training. As such, he represented clients in courts at all levels, including the United States Supreme Court. Jason developed a particular expertise in sports law and has consulted on legal and business issues for the owners and/or prospective owners of teams in Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League. Jason's work has been the subject of articles in numerous publications, including the Wall Street Journal, the Atlanta Business Chronicle and the Atlanta Journal Constitution, and has been quoted in legislation before both the United States Senate and House of Representatives.

Jason is a graduate of Harvard College and the Yale Law School, where he was elected to the Yale Law Journal. Jason is a member of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) and Leadership Atlanta (Class of 2007) is a member of the Atlanta Sports Council and the Sports Lawyers Association. He is a director of both the South Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and the Midwest League of Professional Baseball and a past director of the Carolina League of Professional Baseball.

Hardball Capital is an Atlanta-based company that invests in and operates baseball related businesses. Hardball Capital’s core business is the operation of affiliated Minor League Baseball franchises. Hardball Capital looks for opportunities where it can purchase teams in attractive markets and can improve the performance of those assets through application of its real estate development expertise, operating capabilities and business and sponsor contacts.

Directions from Southbound I-75/I-85 Downtown Connector:

  • Take exit 249D toward Georgia Tech/US-78/US-278/N Ave.
  • Merge onto Williams Street.
  • At the red light, turn right at North Ave.
  • Turn right at the first road onto Techwood Drive. Continue on Techwood Drive and then turn right at 5th Street.
  • After you cross over the bridge on 5th Street, take your first left onto Williams Street.
  • Then take your first right and turn left into the Centergy One parking garage.

Directions from Northbound I-75/I-85 Downtown Connector:

  • Take exit 84 (10th Street/14th Street).
  • At the top of the exit ramp, turn right onto 10th Street and follow it one block to Spring Street.
  • Turn right onto Spring Street.
  • Turn right into the building driveway in front of the LA Fitness and then turn right into the Centergy One parking garage.
  • Walkway from the parking garage to the building:
    • When leaving the parking garage, take the elevator to the fifth floor, then follow the covered walkway to the courtyard between the ATDC Building (Centergy One) and the Technology Square Research Building. The ATDC Building (Centergy One) will be to the left. Enter the ATDC Building, and the main ATDC office will be straight ahead in Suite 100. 

Directions back to I-75/I-85 Downtown Connector:

  • On exiting the parking deck, turn right. Immediately turn right again, onto Williams Street. (Williams Street is one way at this point).
  • Stay in the right lane.
  • Travel two blocks to 10th Street.
  • Turn right onto 10th Street and travel one block to Spring Street.
  • Turn right onto Spring Street. (Spring Street is one way southbound).
  • Follow Spring Street across Fifth Street and across North Avenue.
  • For northbound I-75/85, an entrance ramp will be to the right of Spring Street at Pine.
  • For southbound I-75/85, stay on the left side of Spring Street and follow the signs to the southbound entrance ramp.
  • For northbound I-85, quickly move into one of the four left lanes of the I-75/85 Downtown Connector, as I-85 splits off soon after the entrance ramp. I-75 will split off to the right.
