Entrepreneurial Advice – Where to Get It and From Whom

Entrepreneurs need to have trusted advisers at many levels to grow their business, raise capital, meet forecasts, and eventually sell their company.  This presentation provides practical pointers on good corporate governance, forming an effective Board of Directors and Advisory Board, and effectively using a lawyer and accountant.

Speaker's Bio:   John C. Yates, Partner at Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP

John C. Yates is the partner-in-charge of the Technology Practice and a member of the firm’s IndUS Practice. Mr. Yates is one of the pioneers of the technology law field and has been practicing exclusively in this area for over 27 years. The firm’s technology practice has represented hundreds of technology companies and provided legal services in such areas as IPOs, mergers and acquisitions, patent prosecution, Internet law, biotech and medical devices, e-commerce/distribution, corporate finance and venture capital, international law and dispute resolution.

Mr. Yates is internationally recognized in the technology law field. He has founded and been a member of the Board of Directors of leading technology organizations for over two decades. Mr. Yates helped to found the Southeastern Medical Device Association (SEMDA) in 2004, a non-profit trade organization that supports and promotes medical device companies in the Southeast.  He serves on the editorial board of leading technology publications, and his articles have been cited in the computer law area, including citation by the U.S. Supreme Court in Kodak vs. Image Technical Services. He is a co-author of articles published in The Law and Business of Computer Software and The Handbook of Business Management. Mr. Yates is frequently quoted in business publications, including The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, and the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Mr. Yates has also been recognized in a Harvard Business School case study (“Ockham Technologies: Living on the Razor’s Edge”) as a leading lawyer representing fast growth companies.

Mr. Yates is a frequent speaker at national and international business and technology law organizations. He has delivered more than 250 speeches during his career.  He has also spoken at annual computer law seminars sponsored by the Georgia Bar Association, North Carolina Bar Foundation, Minnesota Computer Law Institute, and American Bar Association’s Section of Science and Technology.  He has received numerous awards and recognitions.

Mr. Yates is currently co-authoring a book, entitled “The Art of Business Friendship,” and is a columnist for various online computer and legal publications. He was selected as a “Georgia Super Lawyer” in the fields of Business/Corporate (Technology) in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 and is among the top five percent of the state’s attorneys to be so honored.

Directions from Southbound I-75/I-85 Downtown Connector:

  • Take exit 249D toward Georgia Tech/US-78/US-278/N Ave.
  • Merge onto Williams Street.
  • At the red light, turn right at North Ave.
  • Turn right at the first road onto Techwood Drive. Continue on Techwood Drive and then turn right at 5th Street.
  • After you cross over the bridge on 5th Street, take your first left onto Williams Street.
  • Then take your first right and turn left into the Centergy One parking garage.

Directions from Northbound I-75/I-85 Downtown Connector:

  • Take exit 84 (10th Street/14th Street).
  • At the top of the exit ramp, turn right onto 10th Street and follow it one block to Spring Street.
  • Turn right onto Spring Street.
  • Turn right into the building driveway in front of the LA Fitness and then turn right into the Centergy One parking garage.
  • Walkway from the parking garage to the building:
    • When leaving the parking garage, take the elevator to the fifth floor, then follow the covered walkway to the courtyard between the ATDC Building (Centergy One) and the Technology Square Research Building. The ATDC Building (Centergy One) will be to the left. Enter the ATDC Building, and the main ATDC office will be straight ahead in Suite 100. 

Directions back to I-75/I-85 Downtown Connector:

  • On exiting the parking deck, turn right. Immediately turn right again, onto Williams Street. (Williams Street is one way at this point).
  • Stay in the right lane.
  • Travel two blocks to 10th Street.
  • Turn right onto 10th Street and travel one block to Spring Street.
  • Turn right onto Spring Street. (Spring Street is one way southbound).
  • Follow Spring Street across Fifth Street and across North Avenue.
  • For northbound I-75/85, an entrance ramp will be to the right of Spring Street at Pine.
  • For southbound I-75/85, stay on the left side of Spring Street and follow the signs to the southbound entrance ramp.
  • For northbound I-85, quickly move into one of the four left lanes of the I-75/85 Downtown Connector, as I-85 splits off soon after the entrance ramp. I-75 will split off to the right.
